If you’re shopping for a new smartphone it’s easy to get enamoured with the latest and greatest smartphones like the LG G2, Samsung Galaxy S4 and the HTC One to name a few. But, the price o  these smartphones pales in comparison to what you will pay for the service of your phone and it’s quite possible that the cost to have your smartphone activated on a network will cost much much more than the cost of the phone, yet everybody tends to get locked into the contract to get a cheap phone when in some cases it may be better to pay full price for the phone outright and shop around for a better deal on your  smartphone plan instead. You could save thousands over the course of 2 years.

How Much Money Can You Save?

Take me for example: our household is currently on Verizon and the cost for our service is over $200.00 a month (Verizon only has the Canada calling option which we need). But if I didn’t need to call Canada and use in Canada to call Canada and the US, I could switch to T-Mobile for $50.00 a month. For the both of us, we  would save $100 a month. That’s $2400 over the course of 2 years. We could buy our phones at $600 each and STILL be ahead over $600 annually.  I just used T-Mobile as a quick example but let’s look at  some other Carriers to see what the best price you can get on a smartphone plan:

Cheapest Verizon Smartphone Plan

Verizon’s pricing for smartphones is far from the cheapest option, but they do offer great service for the most part and as I mentioned earlier for me it’s the only option for a Canadian living in the USA. But with Verizon for smartphones you pay $40.00 for the phone line and then you pick a share everything plan you want. The cheapest smartphone plan you can get with this is $80/month with unlimited talk and text and 500mb of data.

Cheapest AT&T Smartphone Plan

AT&T gets a little cheaper than Verizon when you compare the two. With AT&T, for one smartphone and unlimited talk and text will cost you $70.00 and you only get 300mb of data included in that price. AT&T does offer some prepaid plans that are actually better than the 2 year contract prices if you want to bring your own phone or buy one outright and then bring it to AT&T for activation. With AT&T, the Go Phone service can be had for $40.00 a month for unlimited  text and 500 minutes of calls with 200mb of data. Not a lot of either call time or data but if you don’t use your phone lots this is the cheapest smartphone plan at AT&T.

Cheapest T-Mobile Smartphone Plan

T-Mobile might just be the cheapest smartphone carrier. T-Mobile is different in that you don’t need to commit to a contract and the cheapest rate they offer is $50.00 a month for unlimited talk and text and 500mb of data. There’s also another even cheaper option from T-Mobile for smartphones that  is a bit  hard to find. For just $30.00 a month you get 100 minutes, unlimited data with the first 5GB at 4GB speeds and unlimited text. Another choice for just $30.00 a month is 1500 minutes talk and text and just 30mb of data. For smartphones if you don’t need to use your  phone a lot when it comes to actual calling the $30.00 a month plan is one of the cheapest smartphone options.

Cheapest Sprint Smartphone Plan

The cheapest smartphone plan from Sprint is $70.00 a month.$50.00 a month for the smartphone line and an additional $20.00 a month for the 1GB of data.

Other  Cheap Smartphone Plan  Options

There’s also lots of other carriers out there where you can get a pretty good deal on a smartphone plan: Most have no contract and for the most part cost under $50.00 a month. Let’s have a look at a few other choices for cheaper smartphone plans:

Ting

Ting is without a doubt the cheapest smartphone plan you can buy today. If you don’t use your smartphone a lot it’s sure hard to beat $9.00 month for 100 minutes, 100 text messages and 100MB of data.

Straight Talk

Straight talk offers unlimited talk and text and 2.5GB of high speed data for just $45.00 a month.

Aio Wireless

Aio Wireless offers plans with unlimited talk and text with 250mb of high speed data for just $40.00 a month.

Virgin Mobile

Virgin mobile offers a pretty cheap  smartphone plan for just $35.00 – 300 minutes, unlimited messaging and data. Another great choice if you don’t call a lot.

Boost Mobile

$50 a month for unlimited talk, text and data.

Who has the cheapest smartphone plan?

If you rarely use your phone it’s hard to beat Ting. My next bet would be on T-Mobile and if I could get away with the 100 minutes I would be all over the $30.00 a month plan or if you need more time for calls, the $50.00 a month plan is a good one too but  at this price you should also consider Virgin Mobile, Straight Talk, and Aio Wireless and Boost Mobile too as they’re all in the $50.00 window.

It’s a great time to shop for smartphone plans with so many affordable choices.

With the rising popularity of cellular phone use in the USA and in particular – smartphones have become more and more popular. Sure, you can commit to a 2 year contract with a smartphone from one of the big four carriers (T-Mobile, Sprint,Verizon, AT&T) but for some of us, the thought of paying close to $100 a month on a smartphone plan is just ridiculous – especially if you don’t really have much use of or do not make many calls or are a smartphone power user than a Pre Paid Cell Phone Plan can be a great deal and save you a lot of money. Here’s a look at some of the best prepaid cell phone plans for 2013.

Verizon

Verizon offfers plans for smartphones with may  price choices:

Verizon Pay As You Go

Pay as you go plans allow you to only pay when you use the phone and costs are:

Pay as You Go: .25 cents per minute and .20 cents for text messages and data is .99 a day.
Daily Simple Plan .10 a minute, unlimited mobile to mobile calling .10 for text messaging and .99 a day for data.
Pay Per Day unlimited calling, mobile to mobile , 0.02 texts and .99 a day for data for  just $1.99 a day.

Monthly Prepaid Plans $60 and $70/month. Both get you unlimited talk, text and the only difference between the two plans is the difference in data: 2GB vs 4GB

T-Mobile

Monthly Prepaid  Plans

In effect, all of T-Mobile plans are pre-paid because there’s no contract if you bring your own phone and if you buy a phone from them you can buy it outright.  The plans are $50, $60.00, and $70.00 per month with the differences between them being the amount of data you can use (500mb, 2.5GB, Unlimited). T-Mo also offers a $30.00 a month plan with 100 minutes a month, unlimited text and 5GB of 4G data speeds. If you don’t need much talk time, this is one of the best pre-paid plans in 2013.

Pay as you go plans

There’s also the following pay as you go plans for T-Mobile:

$10 = 30 minutes
$30 = 160 minutes
$50 = 400 minutes

text messages are ten cents each and 25cents each to send photos or videos.

Per Day

$3/day gets you:

  • Unlimited Talk

  • Unlimited Web – First 200MB at up to 4G speeds

$2/day gets you:

  • Unlimited Talk
  • Unlimited Text

All of the Pre-Paid Cell Phone plans are from reliable cellular carriers but if you can get away with the 100 minutes of monthly call time, the $30 a month plan from T-Mobile is hard  to beat and the cheapest pre-paid cell phone award has to go to Ting at just $9.00 a month.

In an effort to get you to part with your old phone on Verizon and upgrade to a newer smartphone from Verizon, they’re currently running a promotion with their trade in and trade up event. It’s pretty easy to get started: Select the manufacturer and model of your phone and Verizon will tell you how much you will get for a trade up value. The prices are not real good for the trade in prices, and you could do better selling your old phone privately on swappa, craigslist or ebay but if you want to get into a new phone and don’t care how much money you will get for your older smartphone, this might be the program you’ve been waiting for when it comes to getting a smartphone upgrade from Verizon.

Screen Shot 2013-09-10 at 2.46.37 PM

I did a bit of research and my old phone, a Motorola Droid 3 was worth $16.00, and a droid RAZR was worth $30.00 as a trade in device. In the case of a droid 3 you should use the mototradeup program instead and get $100 towards a new Motorola phone. The moto tradeup plan has more limits as only certain phones qualify but if you have an older Motorola phone you should investigate the Moto tradeup program first.

Here’s a few more examples for smartphone trade in prices from Verizon:

  • droid razr maxx hd – $119.00
  • droid razr hd – 82.00
  • droid razr $34.00
  • iphone 4s 16gb – $200.00
  • iphone 4 16gb – $100.00
  • iphone 5 16gb – $300.00

It’s funny to see that for every generation of Apple iPhone you lose exactly $100 per. $300 for the iPhone 5, $200 for the iPhone 4s and $100 for the iPhone 4. Compared to the droids the iPhones held their value considerably more.

What phones to buy with your verizon trade in money?

There’s a few choices for new phones to trade up to as we end 2013 (and enter 2014):

LG G2 – (check prices)

HTC One – (check prices)

Samsung Galaxy S4 – (check prices)

Motorola Moto X – (check prices)

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 - (check prices)

Motorola Droid Maxx - (check prices)

How Does The Verizon Trade In Program Work?

The Verizon trade in program is pretty simple in how it works:

1. visit the verizon trade in page.

2. search for the smartphone you want to trade in

3. answer 3 questions about whether the phone powers off/on and goes to the home screen – if there’s any cracks and if there’s any dead spots on the LCD. For Apple iPhones it asks if find my phone under iOS7 is turned off.
