On February 24, Samsung launched its eagerly anticipated sequel to the Galaxy S4. If you were hoping that the company would change its naming convention and call it something like ‘Hashtag H1′, you are in for a disappointment, as Samsung went with ‘Galaxy S5′. The newly minted Smartphone shares the same design ethos – rounded corners, a home button, silvery trim around the edges- as its predecessor. Hey, if it ain’t broke, why fix it? The physical differences between the Galaxy S4 and its sequel may border on the subtle, but that does not mean there are no changes. For example, the back cover is now dimpled, and looks similar to the first generation Nexus 7′s. This should make it easier to keep a grip on the phone. Oh, and the phone will be available in bright blue and copper, in case you find the white and black options boring. Here are ten other things you will love about the Galaxy S5.
1. It Comes with a Gorgeous Display
Contrary to all the rumors, Samsung did not slap a 4K screen on the Galaxy S5, but that, admittedly, would have been overkill. Instead, it comes with a more sedate 1080 by 1920 resolution. At 5.1 inches, it’s a hair larger than that on the Galaxy S4. This reduces the pixel per inch count slightly, but unless you are Superman, you will not notice any difference. The display has excellent contrast and rich colors courtesy of Samsung’s HD AMOLED technology. The company has even provided a setting that gives you a way to dial down the colors, in case you find them too rich. You will love watching House of Cards in high definition on this screen, and considering its wide viewing angles, so will your neighbor.
2. Its Blistering Fast
The Galaxy S5 comes with the same quad-core Snapdragon 80C, processor as its predecessor, but it is clocked at a marginally faster 2.5GHz, compared to the Galaxy S4‘s 2.3GHz. Apps open almost instantly, and it takes practically no time to apply those weird Instagram filters to your holiday photos. Swiping around the user interface feels extremely fluid. Because of its healthy three gigabytes of RAM, the phone never slows down no matter how many applications are open. The Snapdragon 800 is paired with an extremely potent graphics processing unit, the Adreno 330, which guarantees that there will be no lag when playing N.O.V.A 3 or any of your favorite games.
3. It Has a Superb Battery Life
The Galaxy S4 had excellent an excellent battery life, the result of its 2,600mAh power pack and the juice-saving tweaks in Android 4.3. The Galaxy S5 looks set to maintain this tradition courtesy of even more tweaks in Android 4.4 and a higher capacity, and removable 2,800mAh battery. Samsung has even thrown in an Ultra Low Power Saving Mode in case you need to save even more, um, power.
4. It Has Excellent Cameras
Samsung tends to graft high quality camera modules on its phones, and the Galaxy S5 does not buck the trend. The phone comes with a 16 megapixel rear facing camera, a step up from the 13 megapixel unit on the Galaxy S4. The shooter’s autofocus is extremely snappy, making it easier to photograph little Timmy as he chases your dog around the backyard. Samsung calls it Phase Detection autofocus, a feature that is normally found in high-end cameras. The phone’s HDR mode now works on videos and burst shots, and an overlay allows you to preview the effect before applying it. A feature called Virtual Tour gives you the ability to create 36o-degree photos, while Selective Focus allows you to set a new focus point on a photo that you have already taken. Oh, and the phone shoots 4K videos, in case you find 1080 p ones, you know, lacking in detail. The front facing camera is a 2 megapixel affair, good enough for video chatting, selfies and checking your teeth for bits of spinach.
5. Its Rugged
Like the Galaxy S4 Active, and a whole plethora of Sony’s smart phones, the Galaxy S5 is waterproof and dustproof. It conforms to the IP67 military specification, which allows it to survive a dunking in depths of rightly over three feet for up to thirty minutes. This means that you will finally be able to snap close-up photos of your goldfish or take selfies while showering.
6. It Has a Fingerprint Scanner
Rumors swirling around the World Wide Web had it that the Galaxy S5 would come with a retina scanner, but those didn’t pan out. However, you should not be disappointed, as Samsung installed a fingerprint scanner on the phone. Unlike that on the iPhone 5S, the scanner is not built into the home button, but integrated in the screen above it. You can use it to unlock the phone in lieu of a pass code or your favorite squiggly pattern. In addition, Samsung’s newly crafted agreement with PayPal means that you will be able to pay for your favorite drink via a simple swipe of your thumb.
7. It Cares for Your Health
The S-Health app is something geeks and fitness fiends can finally agree on. The health-centric piece of software comes with a pedometer, which counts the number of steps that you have made and then tries to figure out how many calories you have lost, a fitness coach, which allows you to set and hopefully achieve certain fitness goals, an exercise tracker, and, exclusive to the Galaxy S5, a heart rate monitor. The heart rate reader is located on the same place as the camera flash, and glows red when activated. Oh, and couch potatoes can use S-Health to figure out how many calories they have lost working the remote.
8. It Cares for Your Kids
If you have always lived in the morbid fear of your kids finding the racy messages that your boyfriend regularly sends you, Kid’s Mode is the answer to the fervent entreaties that you have been making to the gods of electronics. Similar to the Restricted Profile feature on the second generation Nexus 7, Kid’s Mode enables you to create a profile and restrict the kind of apps it can access.
9. It Comes with Android 4.4
The Galaxy S5 comes with version 4.4 of Android, which is also known as KitKat. It is the latest iteration of the world’s most popular Smartphone operating system, and come with a number of features and improvements. It is faster, but you, Galaxy S5 owner, will not notice this because your Smartphone is already equipped with blazing fast processor. The Messaging app was dropped in favor of Hangouts, while Quickoffice, a document creation and editing suite is installed by default, and vastly improves Android’s productivity chops. Samsung throws in its own document editing suite in case Quickoffice fails to impress you.
10. All the Other Stuff
The Galaxy S5 comes with an infrared blaster that you can use to control your television and other media equipment. Don’t waste your time looking for the Watch On app, as Samsung has renamed it Smart Remote, which is more apt. The phone also supports expandable storage, a boon for anyone who loves HD movies. Another change that you will notice the first time you charge or connect it to a computer is the USB 3.0 port, which allows you to copy files faster. It is backwards compatible with the venerable USB 2.0 ports, so do not throw away your old cable. Samsung also tweaked the WiFi antenna setup on the Galaxy S5 to improve connection speeds.
